CALGARY – Calgarians are getting their first look at redevelopment plans for Deerfoot Mall that will see the facility transformed into an outdoor shopping destination.

Newly released digital renderings and video show the existing site altered to include a network of outdoor streets and plazas with restaurants and patios.

The redevelopment turns the current site into a space dubbed ‘Deerfoot City’ by Vancouver-based Shape Properties.

“Deerfoot City will be unique to suburban Calgary, and will meet the growing demand from leading retailers and restaurants looking for creative new places with a vibrant, rich social experience and urban feel that differentiates them from traditional malls,” explains Executive Vice President of Shape Properties Darren Kwiatkowski.

“At the same time, the districts within the master plan enable us to cater to the significant passerby commuter traffic by placing general merchandise and quick grab-and-go type businesses on the periphery of the property for ease and convenience.”

The transformation of Deerfoot Mall will occur over several phases.

The initial phase on the north side of the property will be completed this spring, including the introduction of a GoodLife Fitness and a collection of quick-service restaurants.

Hunting, fishing and camping store Cabela’s will open in fall of 2015, and a new Canadian Tire will open in fall 2016.

The major demolition of the mall to create the new high street is scheduled to commence in spring 2016 with completion in fall 2017.
