REGINA – The Regina Provincial Correctional Centre was put on lockdown this weekend after the prison was short staffed.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of Justice said some correctional workers chose not to come to work in reaction to disciplinary action that was handed out.

“Employees chose to react to some HR matters that had occurred a couple of weeks earlier,” said Drew Wilby, executive director of corporate affairs for the Ministry of Justice.

Wilby didn’t say how many workers were short but said the prison was not at a crisis point.

“Because of the shortage of staff and that nature, we felt to secure the safety of that building that we would put it on lockdown just to make sure that both offenders and staff were safe,” said Wilby.

Lockdown differs per unit. Wilby said some inmates were confined to their dorm unit and weren’t allowed outside. Other inmates were confined to their cells.

The lockdown began late Saturday and normal operations resumed around noon on Monday.
