SASKATOON – A Saskatoon organization is receiving an accolade for the work it’s done in the community. READ Saskatoon has been chosen as a recipient of the 11th annual Council of Federation Literacy Award for Saskatchewan.

The award is given annually for excellence in the field of literacy in each of Canada’s provinces and territories.

READ Saskatoon was selected by an independent committee for their significant contributions to the advancement of literacy in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan’s premier stated he was grateful for the work it’s done.

“For more than 35 years, READ Saskatoon volunteers have given thousands of people hope and a fuller sense of the possibilities in life. They have made our community stronger,” said Brad Wall.

A ceremony will be held this fall to formally present READ Saskatoon with the award. Each recipient receives a certificate signed by the premier, as well as a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion.

First established as a volunteer agency in 1979, READ Saskatoon addresses and supports the advancement of literacy and learning by providing a range of services for adults and families.

Sept. 8 was also proclaimed “Literacy Day in Saskatchewan” by the provincial government.
