Calgary launches permit exemption to simplify secondary suite applications

City council debated a proposal to streamline the process for applying for secondary suites in December, 2014. Global News

CALGARY – Designing a secondary or “basement” suite just got a lot easier. The City of Calgary launched a new 18-month Development Permit to make it less expensive, faster and easier for homeowners to develop a legal and safe secondary suite.

If properties meet all the requirements of the Land Use Bylaw and have proper zoning, the city will waive the Development Permit application and fee.

Cliff De Jong, special project coordinator with the planning, development and assessment department said the exemption will save homeowners $2,200, plus weeks in approval time. Homeowners will be able to move right to the Building Permit application step.

The permit exemption was approved last month, and runs until March 3, 2017.

Jong hopes simplifying the process will encourage the development of more safe secondary suites in the city.
