At least 15 victims involved in odometer fraud: Calgary police

WATCH ABOVE: Calgary police have charged four people for rolling back odometers of high mileage vehicles before selling them to unsuspecting buyers. Global’s Jill Croteau reports.

CALGARY – Police have arrested four people accused of rolling back odometers of high mileage vehicles before selling them to unsuspecting buyers.

Investigators believe at least 15 people purchased vehicles which had been altered to show low mileage, when in fact they had travelled anywhere from 50 to 70 per cent more kilometers than advertised.

Officers executed a search warrant on a home in the 0-100 block of Rocky Ridge Circle N.W.  on August 6, seizing the following items:

  • Odometer rollback devices
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Bill of sale documents
  • $10,000 cash
  • License plates
  • Driver’s licenses not belonging to those in the residence
  • Bear spray
  • A baton

Police arrested 25-year-old Damian Funk, his 27-year-old common-law wife Stephanie Degner, 35-year-old Jonathan Yardley and his 30-year-old brother Ashley Yardley.

Their charges are as follows:

  • Damian Funk: seven counts of fraud over $5,000 and nine counts of fraud under $5,000. Funk is also charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 for the same offence in Edmonton.
  • Stephanie Degner: one count of fraud over $5,000.
  • Jonathan Yardley: two counts of fraud over $5,000.
  • Ashley Yardley: arrested on six outstanding warrants stemming from similar allegations in Edmonton.

Funk and Jonathan Yardley are scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Sept. 4.

Degner is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Ashley Yardley is scheduled to appear in court on Edmonton on Friday, Sept. 25.

Police expect further charges to be laid.
