Man dead, kids in hospital after Highway 22 crash west of Calgary

ABOVE WATCH: One man is dead and two children were taken to hospital after a deadly collision on Highway 22 just south of Highway 1. Global’s Jill Croteau reports.

CALGARY – An Edmonton man is dead and two young girls are in hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Cochrane, Alta. on Monday afternoon.

EMS said paramedics from Calgary, Cochrane and Priddis responded to the crash at about 1:10 p.m.

RCMP said a truck was southbound on Highway 22 when a northbound car made a U-turn in front of it and struck the car on the driver’s door. The driver of the car, a 48-year-old man from Edmonton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck had six people inside—a family from Wildwood, Alta.

Two young girls believed to be between the ages of one and four years old were transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in stable and non-life-threatening condition.

Two young boys, a man and a woman were also assessed on by paramedics but uninjured.

RCMP said the two kids were taken to hospital as a precaution, and the family traveled with them in the ambulance.

Cochrane RCMP said Highway 22 south of Highway 1 remained closed in both directions as of 3 p.m. as the investigation continued.

Alcohol and speed are not believe to be a factor in the crash.
