REGINA – Craven campers are used to full control over the decoration of their campsites at the Country Jamboree – but this year organizers are asking that the confederate flags be left at home.
While the confederate flag has not been banned outright, organizers will go around ask those flying it to take them down.
The request is prompted by the recent church shooting in South Carolina where the shooter used the flag as a symbol of his racist beliefs.
Kim Blevins, Craven Country Jamboree Marketing Director, doesn’t believe that those with the flag are being offensive, but are just unaware.
“I think that once we can get the message out about the tragedy in South Carolina people will start to understand what the symbol really means and they’ll stop using it and stop buying it,” said Blevins.
“Wal-mart and other flag stores have stopped selling it. People will get the message and it will slowly just go away.” Blevins also said organizers will ask concert-goers to remove the flags, but will not force the issue.
The Craven Country Jamboree takes place from July 9 to 12.
