Man dead after vehicle leaves road, enters water

Calgary Police say one man is dead after responding to a call for a vehicle in the water at the intersection of Stoney Trail and Glenmore Trail southeast early Saturday morning.

The Calgary Fire Department Aquatics Rescue Team was called to the scene, where the vehicle was approximately four metres underwater in a retaining pond.

The water rescue started just after 1:30 a.m. where the Aquatic Rescue Team pulled one man from the submerged vehicle.

Police say the man was transported to hospital in critical condition and later died.

So far, the driver is believed to be the only person who was in the vehicle.

No other injuries were reported.

Police say they were first called to the scene for a suspected impaired driver.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or speed were factors.

The eastbound Glenmore Trail off-ramp from Stoney Trail is closed as police continue the investigation.
