More people evacuated as progress made fighting Sask. wildfires

LA RONGE, Sask. – Crews continue to battle wildfires in northern Saskatchewan as more people are being evacuated. Firefighters are currently dealing with 41 forest fires, seven less than yesterday.

Government officials said progress was made in the last 24 hours as air quality improved in most areas.

Fires in the Sucker River and Clearwater areas are now contained but a large wildfire near La Ronge is still burning out of control.

One house and 12 remote cabins have been destroyed.

According to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, 1,160 people have now been evacuated due to smoke and fire. Most of the evacuees are either in Saskatoon or Prince Albert.

There have been 349 wildfires in Saskatchewan so far in 2015, over double the number at the same time last year.
