Northern Saskatchewan man found unresponsive in RCMP custody dies

LA RONGE, Sask. – Saskatoon police are investigating an in-custody death after a man was found unresponsive in a RCMP cell area in La Ronge, Sask. Mounties say the 43-year-old was found around midnight on May 31.

He was taken to the local hospital and then transferred to a Saskatoon hospital. The man was pronounced dead on Monday.

His name has not been released at this time but he was from La Ronge.

RCMP requested an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sudden death. In addition, they asked for an independent observer to be appointed.

Saskatoon’s major crimes unit will report the results of their findings to the Ministry of Justice and attorney general.
