NEAR FAUQUIER — There is trouble on Highway 6 in the north Okanagan. What Drive BC is reporting as a mudslide is actually the highway slumping. There are large cracks in the road bed west of the Needles ferry dock at Arrow Lake. The cause for the road sloughing has yet to be determined. A Ministry of Transportation spokesperson tells Global News heavy rain and snow may have caused the bank underneath the road to shift. The ministry says there is no official detour in place. However, some motorists are using a side road, parallel to the highway, at their own risk. The ministry is currently conducting a geotechnical assessment. Drive BC does not offer an estimate on when Highway 6 will re-open.
Meanwhile, there are reports some of the Fauquier Golf Course, which is just across the lake, is collapsing into the lake bed. Several people have taken to Facebook to express their concern.
Earlier Wednesday morning, a logging truck with a full load caught fire, initially closing the highway at Shuswap Hill six kilometres east of Lumby. The blaze was quickly contained by fire crews.
