TORONTO – Valentine’s Day is nearly here, which means well-intentioned sweethearts are busy plotting a romantic evening for their significant other. But if time isn’t on your side there are lots of last minute gestures you can make using only your trusty smartphone.
Send flowers with a personal message
Nectar Flowers – an Ottawa-based startup – allows users to send floral arrangement to anyone with a mobile device. The app only requires the recipient’s cellphone number, email address or Twitter account to start an order. The florist contacts the recipient to arrange a delivery spot and time that’s convenient.
Users are able to pick from a variety of arrangements and bouquets – all of which are sourced from eco-friendly farms around the world – and see their selections before putting in an order.
The app even allows you to record a video message to send with the order. (Android/App Store)
For the guy that doesn’t want to risk buying the wrong size
Lingerie is a popular gift for Valentine’s Day – but for some, the fear of buying their partner the wrong size can take the fun out of the whole thing. Thankfully, there is a solution your lady will love.
ThirdLove allows users to find their perfect bra measurements from the comfort of their own home by taking two pictures of themselves in the mirror with their iPhone. And, no, the app doesn’t require you to be naked or even topless to take the picture – a form fitting t-shirt will do the trick.
Women praise the site for its unique half cup sizes and customizable lingerie.
Bonus: ThirdLove allows users to send e-gift cards via email – perfect for the last-minute shopper.
The ThirdLove app is only available on iOS at the moment.
Learn how to make your Valentine’s favourite dishes with advice from real people
Following recipes from gourmet chefs can be hard, no matter how easy they promise it to be.
Cooking app Simmer allows users to create short thirty-second videos showing how to create their favourite recipes step-by-step. The app does feature some master chefs, but at-home cooks can also upload their favourite recipes with easy to copy variations of appetizers, entrees and desserts.
Pinterest is also a very popular choice for easy to recreate recipes (Android/App Store).
For the ‘super last minute, need a gift now or else I’ll be single’ kind of person
If you are really running short on time and cash, why not channel your inner teenager and make a playlist of your SO’s favourite songs on your iPod.
For bonus points, download an uber-romantic candle app and have it playing on your iPod dock when your Valentine gets home.
Or, give them some new music for their own collection. Apple allows iTunes users to gift albums, songs, movies and apps using the recipients Apple ID. Drake dropped a surprise album just in time for the occasion.
