WINNIPEG – RCMP have been called in to help the Dakota Ojibway Police Service investigate the death of a two-year-old boy Saturday on Waywayseecappo First Nation in Manitoba.
The toddler has had some involvement with Child and Family Services, said Tara Seel of the RCMP, but she would not say whether he was in CFS care when he died.
The boy was living with a foster family before he was returned to his biological mother earlier this year, community members said.
RCMP’s serious crimes unit is helping to investigate after the Mounties were called in Saturday. The boy was airlifted out of the community early Saturday but didn’t survive, sources said.
The name of the boy wasn’t released and the cause of death isn’t available yet, Seel said.
Earlier this month, the mother, father and stepsister of a 21-month-old girl who had been involved with Child and Family Services were charged in connection with her death on Peguis First Nation in July.

Manitoba has worked to improve Child and Family Services since the death of Phoenix Sinclair, 5, who was killed in 2005 after CFS returned her to her mother. Samantha Kematch, her mother, and Karl Wesley McKay, her stepfather, were convicted of first-degree murder in 2008 and are currently serving life sentences.

Waywayseecappo is located east of Russell, Man., 280 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
