VANCOUVER – Owners of a farm in Langley are dealing with the tragic loss of some of their animals after they perished in a fire on Monday afternoon.

Langley Township assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson says crews were called to the home in the 21800-block of 8th Avenue around 4:35 p.m. and found the barn fully engulfed.

“We did release two lamas, or alpacas, and a number of ducks,” says Ferguson, “but unfortunately the ones that were inside the barn, there was nothing we could do for them.”

He says six horses, three sheep and a family of pygmy goats died in the blaze.

The fire crews did have to tank water to the location but Ferguson says that did not slow their response time. “Unfortunately by the time anyone had noticed the barn was on fire it was already too late,” he says.

The cause of the fire is accidental and it is believed to be an electrical fault at this time.

No firefighters or residents were injured in the fire.
