Memorial created for teen killed outside downtown bar

CALGARY – A touching tribute has been created for a Calgary teen stabbed to death outside a downtown bar one year ago.

18-year-old Lukas Strasser-Hird was killed in a violent altercation between two groups in a Beltline alley on Saturday, November 23rd, 2013.

Now, the Trails West Hockey Association has created a special memorial for him in the Flames’ Community Arenas on 47th Avenue S.W.

“It’s bittersweet,” says Lukas’ father Dale Hird. “I’ve been coming to this rink for 30 years and seen the other memorials that have been there, and never dreamed to have one for my son there… but that’s how it is.”

Hockey was a huge part of the young man’s life, and his family says the memorial is a bright spot in what has been an awful year for them.

“It’s been pretty hard,” says Lukas’ sister Julia Hird. “It’s hard, you know, not being able to talk to him.”

The five men accused of killing Strasser-Hird are scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
