PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – The Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL) announced Saturday that Marc Habscheid has been signed as head coach for the remainder of the season.

Saturday night’s game between the Raiders and the Saskatoon Blades will mark his debut at the Art Hauser Centre.

“This is a very exciting day for me as I look forward to returning to coaching in my home province,” said Habscheid.

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to join the Raiders and be part of this community.”

Habscheid, 51, was born in Swift Current, Sask., and has an extensive playing and coaching career at many levels of hockey.

As a player, he started in the WHL as a member of the Blades and was a sixth-round NHL draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1981.

His coaching career started in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with the Melfort Mustangs. He transitioned into the WHL in 1997 with the Kamloops Blazers and then the Kelowna Rockets.

In 2004, he coached the Rockets to their only Memorial Cup championship.

He was an associate coach with the Boston Bruins in the 2006-2007 season before returning to the WHL.

On Friday, the Raiders relieved Cory Clouston as head coach.
