Alberta byelections: Calgary-West open after Ken Hughes steps down

EDMONTON — Albertans will be heading to the polls Oct. 27 to vote in four separate byelections.

Three of the byelections are in Calgary and one in Edmonton. The Tories hold 57 of 87 seats in the Alberta Legislature, so the results won’t affect the balance of power.

Here’s a closer look at the candidates running in the Calgary-West riding, which will be up for grabs after Ken Hughes announced he would be stepping down to help Prentice pursue his goal of government revitalization.

Progressive Conservative Party:  Mike Ellis

Ellis has been a member of the Calgary Police Service for the past 12 years. He has worked in community policing as well as working with some of the city’s most vulnerable people through the Alberta Secretariat on Homelessness. He also trains other officers in how to help victims of crime.

Wildrose: Sheila Taylor

Taylor has been a public school trustee with the Calgary Board of Education since 2010 and recently completed a term there as chair of the board. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a bachelor of commerce degree, Taylor spent eight years with Imperial Oil and worked in marketing, sales, accounting and management. She has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta.

New Democratic Party: Brian Malkinson

Malkinson is a technician at a Calgary diesel heavy equipment supplier. In 2012, he ran in Calgary-Northwest for the Alberta NDP but did not win.

Alberta Party: Troy Millington

Millington is a self-employed computer consultant.

Liberal Party: David Khan 

Khan is a lawyer who specializes in aboriginal law across western Canada.
