EDMONTON – A 29-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a fatal pedestrian collision early Wednesday morning in south Edmonton.

Global News has learned the woman’s name is Tamara Zohner.

The Edmonton Police Service did not release the name of the woman Wednesday because officers said a publication ban was in place. However, Alberta Justice confirmed Thursday that the publication ban does not apply to the woman’s name.

On Friday, a spokesperson for the EPS explained the publication ban confusion.

“We have confirmed that there is a Criminal Code Section 517 publication ban in effect,” said Chad Orydzuk. “Upon review of the matter, it was determined that there was a misunderstanding of the scope of the ban, in that it does not prevent the name of the accused from being published.”

Shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to a pedestrian collision on the ramp to Gateway Boulevard north of 23 Avenue.

It was reported that a Dodge Dakota truck was heading north from 23 Avenue down the ramp to Gateway Boulevard when it hit a 25-year-old man near the end of the ramp.

Paramedics arrived on scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

The woman behind the wheel was not injured.

Investigators determined that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The fatal crash shut down a portion of the major roadway for several hours Wednesday morning, which impacted drivers during the morning commute.

Gateway Boulevard from 19 Avenue to 28 Avenue, and the ramp from 23 Avenue to Gateway Boulevard, was closed to traffic for several hours.
