CALGARY – The province is warning hikers to be cautious of cougars along a popular trail west of Calgary.
The Government of Alberta posted a public advisory on the Alberta Parks website just after noon on Thursday.
They warn numerous cougar sightings have been reported on Alder Trail, located in Bragg Creek Provincial Park.

People visiting that area are being asked to use the following precautions:
- Make plenty of noise and travel in a tight group. Keep children close
- Be aware of your surroundings. Leave the area if you see or smell a carcass.
- Keep your pet on a leash at all times.
- Carry bear Spray. Ensure it is easily accessible and you know how to use it.
Officials say cougars can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time.
If you spot a cougar, you’re asked to report it by calling 403-933-7172.
