The Liberal government has voted to keep the B.C. oil tanker ban place, defeating a Conservative bill that would have repealed it.
MPs voted along party lines during second reading in the House of Commons today, with only the Conservatives voting to move the bill forward to the committee stage.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who made a rare appearance after question period to vote in person on several bills today, struck a deal with the B.C. government earlier this summer to keep the ban in place.
The existing law, the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act, prohibits tankers from carrying more than 12,500 metric tonnes of crude oil in areas along the northern coast of British Columbia.
The Conservatives have argued the law is undermining Canada’s prosperity by limiting the potential for oil exports from B.C.’s northern coast to international markets.
Alberta originally envisioned that the proposed Pacific Link oil pipeline would export from the northern coast, but the route was revised this summer to go south to respect the ban.
@ f#ck carney…..the day I take a beating from an Albertan is the day heck freezes over. Better bring lots of friends! Around 20 might be close?! Maybe 25?!!!

Sounds like Ben is offering a happy ending.

Courts all the way up to the Supreme Court of Canada have been clear; FN do not have a defacto veto over resource projects.
So what happens when the BC Conservatives go to Carney to ask for the ban to be removed?
Will the Liberals overrule the wishes of the provincial government?
i know it is a long read, but for all you smith and PP loving comservatives, i urge you to read the entire story on the “exxon valdez” in wikipedia.
i bet that after reading it, you will agree with me that PP and Smith are actually criminally disrespectful of FN .
FN were correct in refusing Smith’s (rebecca schultz”s ) flattery and shiny beads.
@Fatkatz they do not carry bitumen…..alberta bitumen is the problem. there is no technology to clean it up once a spill occurs. a spill would kill all the livelihood of those FN,
google “Exxon Valdez”
PP and Smith display a deep disrespect for the livelihood and lives of the coastal First Nations by keeping up their attempts at repealing the tanker ban.
Their insistance on destroying the livelihood for the coastal FN is disgusting .
Anonymous@ 12.50 how bout lets go have coffee together noting wrong with two men taking out frustrations out on each other ,i guarantee you i will leave you with a smile
of course they do like a cockroach ,once in hard to remove
American tankers move oil down this same coast from Alaska every day, and the law says nothing to them.
@Ben. Why don’t you answer me? Your IQ is room temperature and you can’t match my intelligence. Uneducated lazy Gen z
Carney the NDP and the Quebec Froguois are 3 of the worst 5 things of being Canadian.
When did you Cons start whining about everything. In the past you were wrong about everything, but at least you were more optimistic.
Carney has been focused on improving Canada from the moment he was elected and we’ve got tangible results. I’ve seen nothing to indicate that he’s corrupt, but if you have proof and not just fantasy take it to the police.
Carney’s not going to cancel the pipeline MOU, the idea is ridiculous. They’ll proceed with a proponent and get shovels in the ground in late ’27 or ’28. Since its the same route as Trans Mountain it’ll make money like Trans Mountain.
It’ll probably come as a surprise that the majority of Canadians want all of Canada to prosper, including Alberta. The only people I see cheering for Canada to fail are a group of idiot Cons. You know. You guys.
Canada
Carney and the Slimy Liberals are just for themselves and do not give a damn about C
Of course they did. All you folks who voted Option #1; you still happy? The next move by Carney will be repealing the pipeline MOU.
Yep, this is exactly why this pipeline will never get built. The route is too long and too expensive to be profitable. The LPC and their empty word salad is beyond meaningless.
BC Resident. The Cons are throwing a tantrum because they believed that Poilievre was going to win the last election in a landslide. Of course that was based on a superficial analysis of the top line poll numbers that ignored the fact that Poilievre was about as popular as Trudeau. As soon as the Liberals replaced Trudeau with Carney that all changed and the Cons lost. Since then they’ve been mad and are lashing out.
What more evidence does one need. Conservatives are the enemies of humanity.

The Conservatives are a bunch of women. Complain, complain, complain and complain. And can’t tell the truth if their life depends on it.
Then there is Bc resident. Sounds like a querulous child who needs a good whipping.
The Conservatives are a bunch of women. Complain, complain, complain and complain. And can’t tell the truth if their life depends on it.
Hey Groovy, they just can’t bear to tell the truth. Every conservative comment in here is filled with untruths. It boggles the mind, especially as Carney is the greatest conservative PM in our history! They are getting literally everything they say they want, yet not happy. This world cannot satisfy the rich (nor their thrawls)
Ending the tanker ban only comes from those with the IQ of a turnip mostly from the prairie provinces particularly Alberta who don’t have enough brains to realize they can’t eat or breathe oil! Doorknobs BEYOND DOORKNOBS!!!
Groovy, they were literally all against it. People like you just keep moving the goalposts to never admit anything was a failure or waste of time and money.
You gobble everything up the Liberals do. You didn’t even have any details and you’re cheering on membership.
You’ve lowered the quality of life for all Canadians by voting for a Drama teacher 3 times and then thought a elite billionaire banker that ran on getting trade deal cared about you.
Liberals are the most naive and gullible people and it’s exactly why terrorists call you all “useful idiots”
All part of the plan to keep Canada crippled and dependant on liberal alies.
Roach: Stop lying. That is not what happened. Are you ignorant, or just dishonest? Those countries did not like the term “associate member”. ALL of them support establishing a special relationship with deep ties to Canada. It was about semantics, not substance. Why can’t conservatives stop making stuff up all that time?!?
This is so important to all the industries in BC especially coastal fisheries. Oil Is on its way out. Please keep this tanker ban !
Big tankers do not want to risk running aground. Look at the Exxon Valdez! It didn’t run aground causing a huge oil spill in Alaska. That was a story drummed up by the environmental whiners and those entitled natives.
I know everything. The only accident in history with these very safe tankers was the Exxon Valdez and they cleaned that up in a Jiffy! Forget about that still trapped oil in the Alaska shoreline and the lasting impacts on sea life! That’s just a rumour by those environmental whiners and those entitled natives hurting the rest of Canada.
Roy: a ship can cause enough of a bow wave to expose the sea floor? Where do you get this nonsense from. And have you ever seen tides, or storms. They are natural events that occur regularly.
If the water is not deep enough, then there would be no traffic.
Big tankers do not want to risk running aground.
The tanker ban is nothing but environmental whiners and entitled natives hurting the rest of Canada.
Good job to keep oil spills from killing BC’s coast. Alberta can send its tar sands oil south or east.
France, Germany, Italy, Poland all vetoed Canada’s associated member application for the EU another stupid waste of time e and money by Carney !!! Oh well at least he got travel and banquet at the tax payers expense. 18 months and counting still no Carney trade deals.
The Hecate Strait is well known to be a large area of very shallow water. Wave action from the deep waters around it will push massive waves into the strait, which of course lifts up as they enter the relatively shallows waters. The result are massive waves and strong currents. It is said that the waves get so high that the seafloor can actually become exposed in the valleys between waves. It might be an exaggeration, but the fact remains that even large ships should avoid the area.
A bit misleading. The bill does not ban tankers. It generally blocks tanker, same as the prior BC ban. But it allows exceptions if justified. That was the key difference, and why you don’t have any real reason to abolish the bill. Tanker traffic to Prince Rupert would probably qualify for exceptions.
Brookfield called and reminded Carney of the Brookfield Global Transition Fund (the “Leave it in the Ground Fund”) that he created … and that removing the tanker ban would negatively affect his Brookfield stock portfolio!
The incoming Conservative Premier of BC does not support ending the tanker ban.
Notwithstanding act time
useless bloody liberals, have done nothing too help people
Good news! Common Sense has prevailed.
Why would he do this. Does he really want to destroy Canada.
Carney, Smith, and Eby agreed to fast track a pipeline to Vancouver, which is a good thing? Trudeau bought Kinder Morgan, extended it and doubled it, which was also a good thing. Harper, the PM from Alberta, didn’t build a pipeline to the West Coast and counted on the Americans to build Keystone XL, but none of you complain about that. Ford and Smith are talking about a pipeline east, but none of you are talking about that. Instead, you’re just going over Alberta’s endless grievance politics. Take a step back and look at where we are today and ask why eliminating the tanker ban and getting a pipeline to Prince Rupert is so important when you have agreement to fast track a pipeline to Vancouver.
Since we are not going to get pipelines to west coast and revenue out of it lefties can always tax the rich and when they are gone there is always middle class to tax
Cowards holding back progress
How to kill an economy, how to kill a country: allow liberals to run it. The third-richest country in the world keeps everything in the ground and now has the poorest people in the G20; unreal. We could be so rich and so prosperous, but for some reason the Canadian population wants poverty and pain and starvation.
Oh of course they do. Tell me, how is a pipeline supposed to work if we cant load tankers on the coast? What the f*ck is Carney doing? Wish we could we could get rid of Carney. The man makes me sick.
I would like to ask you azzholes who are against oil extraction etc, think we are going to pay off the trillion dollars of debt now owed. How do you al think that will be achieved now? By taxing the ever loving azzes off of of us. YOU INCLUDED YOU MORONS!!
@Anonymous 711pm. When I’m clearly proven wrong with solid unbiased stats and the commenter doesn’t make a personal attack, I change my mind and admit my error. What do you do?
I love all the losers who don’t want a pipeline or tankers. Have you changed your lifestyle to NOT include any oil products including plastics? Didn’t’ think so, HYPOCRITES!
@Ben 649 pm. The great vaccuous insufferable Ben admits a mistake. Since you are wrong ALL THE TIME, can you keep your opinions to yourself and SHUT UP!!
Hey Ben. When will BC start compensating the US and RoC for forest fires? Hey? When??
Of course. Carney has no interest in building the new pipeline to B.C. , he also doesn’t have the NDP in B.C. either holding the project back anymore. Carney is sucking and blowing at the same time.
Ben: the billions in taxes and royalties are the payment. If Canada isn’t helpful to AB, why should their wealth fill federal coffers? Hmm?
Carney is not serious about Canada being an ‘energy superpower’. Always with the green strings attached. Gotta pay off his real masters
One of the area proposed is a route to Prince Rupert. That route follows the Skeena River a major route and salmon migration serving the whole westcoast fishing industry. An oil spill in that region would be devastating to the whole industry. Rupert is a fishing industry and I can see a lot of opposition in that city and the region. Alberta needs to pony up billions for the clean up if there were an oil spill. before there are any agreement.
@Ben 624pm. Thanks for the correction, clearly I made a mistake about how the majority of Canadians feel on the subject. I live in BC so the tanker ban here is very much supported but that is anecdotal so I should not assume. Should have checked about Canada stats. I still support the tanker ban though, as well as the new pipeline and it’s route. Cheers.
The Liberals have prevented another Exxon Valdex-type disaster from happening on the northern half of BC’s coast.
Confused: Poilievre claimed that U.S. tankers are going through the same water, but he was wrong. U.S. tankers are further out to sea beyond the moratorium area.
The problem is that its not clear that the oil sands oil floats. If it sinks, even after floating for a short time, it will be much harder to clean up than the oil spilled in Prince William Sound when the Exxon Valdez went down. We don’t want that in B.C.
A second pipeline has been approved for Alberta oil to get to the Pacific through Vancouver, which is a safer route to the sea. This meets Alberta needs while protecting sensitive northern waters. I don’t see how maintaining the tanker ban is preventing Alberta prosperity. Seems to me that works for everyone. Everyone except irrational Alberta separatists who want the northern gateway just because and they’re going to throw a tantrum unless they get it.
Before you say that Prince Rupert is closer to Asia than Vancouver, let me point out that the difference is not great and the additional cost, if any, is marginal.
Roughly 29% to 37% of Canadians favour keeping the federal west coast oil tanker ban in place, while about 49% to 55% want it lifted or carved out for specific pipeline projects.
Recent public opinion polls show the following numbers regarding the tanker ban:
• Angus Reid Institute (July 2026): 29% of Canadians want to keep the tanker ban in place, while 49% want it either fully lifted (23%) or carved out for a northern B.C. pipeline project (26%).
• CBC News / Poll data (2026): 30% of Canadians want to keep the tanker ban, while nearly half want it repealed (23%) or excused for a northern project (26%).
• Nanos Research / The Globe and Mail: 55% of Canadians are in favour of lifting the ban on tanker traffic to allow a new oil pipeline from Alberta to B.C., while 37% oppose lifting it.
Great news. This allows a pipeline to be built, yet satisfies the vast majority of Canadians who want a tanker ban kept in place.
The canadian tankers are banned yet the American
tankers going through the same water are allowed
doesn’t make any sense.
Rescinding the oil tanker moratorium act would that not give the natives good paying jobs and a better life as well as do away with the native act and be true canadians with a notable life along with their traditions
What a clown this guy is. He is preventing ANY prosperity for the west so he can keep the ONTARIO crowd happy and keep money back east. What a CLOWN. BC & Alberta NEED these tankers and the exports. We need to seperate from the East!
