Pamela Wallin, a former broadcaster who was at the centre of an expense scandal that rocked the Senate, has resigned her seat in the Upper House.
A notice from the Clerk of the Senate Monday indicated that Wallin, 73, had resigned her seat as of Oct. 18. There’s so far no explanation for why the senator, who represented Saskatchewan since her appointment in 2009, resigned before the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Wallin was appointed on the advice of then-prime minister Stephen Harper in 2009. The former CBC and CTV broadcaster was one of the most recognizable faces for years in the Red Chamber.

She remained a recognizable face during the Senate expense scandal, which rocked the Upper House and destabilized Harper’s government in 2013. She, along with former senators Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau, became the focus of media reporting and later police investigations into dodgy spending and expense claims.
An audit of Wallin’s spending ended in her repaying roughly $150,000, including interest, for expense claims the Senate retroactively deemed inappropriate.
While court documents revealed that the RCMP believed Wallin had broken the law and were trying to gather proof of criminal wrongdoing, the police force announced in 2016 that Wallin would not be charged.
“I’m very relieved after three long years … I’m glad this nightmare is over,” Wallin told reporters at the time.
Wallin was suspended without pay from the Senate during the scandal and left the Conservative caucus, most recently sitting with the Canadian Senators Group. The former broadcaster has kept a low profile in recent years.
Wallin’s office did not immediately return Global News’ request for an interview Monday morning.
Next he’s gonna tell us Doug Ford is a Conservative 🤣

She was appointed as a Conservative and expensed Conservative Party activities as senate expenses.”
I wonder what the bribe/extortion was that caused it…

Has she figured out where she lives, yet ?
Pamela Wallin was caught on security camera stealing a chocolate bar at Corner Gas episode…”Hook, Line and Sinker” it show’s her true colours.. LIBERAL. THIEF.
Yeah, good place for a thief to keep fleecing taxpayers – the SENATE. A BRITISH TRADITION that we really need to get rid of in Canada and once the federal govt gets rid of the SENATE the PM can CUT OUR TAXES since we will no longer have to support all the most useless senators, all of them. And get rid of the expensive to keep ROYAL advisor Governor General position in our CANADIAN govt to since Pierre Trudeau got rid of Royal rule in Canada years ago now.
97 to go!
Good! One less self entitled p*g to pay for. Abolish the damned useless senate. Sober second thought my azz. Bourbon and whiskey tears flow there!
Wallin is but one of those parasites. We need to be rid of another 300 or more.
Pamela Wallowinit
Maybe she has better things to to with her time then be an irrelevant Senator for two more years.
Tony. Senators aren’t appointed by the King. They are appointed bt the GG on the advice of the PM, so by the PM. Best option would to eliminate the Senate, to avoid the priblem Ben raised earlier.
Isn’t the Canadian Senate appointed by the King of England? How is it that Canada—a country that should be truly independent—still exists as a British colony? It is time to either abolish the Senate or have its members elected directly by the public!
White People. The obvious answer is proportional representation in the House of Commons.
@rich no the heck your vote is not equal. first past the post eliminates equality
as long as you got money, criminal charges are just a rounding error. we’re so free you guys!
@Rich 416pm. Agreed. I also don’t want the potential nightmare of the House of Commons and Senate fighting and NOTHING gets done, as in the USA. A Triple E senate is a hard no.
Why have an elected Senate in a country where every citizen is equal? My vote is equal to every other citizen in the country and has to be taken equally into consideration in making decisions affecting the country. The only purpose of an elected Senate would be for land in one part of the country to be used to overcome my right to equal participation in Canada’s democracy. It’s time to reject the Triple E Senate because it would an anti-democratic institution.
If Senate is to survive it needs to be elected to four year terms .
Canada’s Senate has been the taskless thanks dumping ground for party hacks and flacks since the beginning. Senators have done some good work over the years, but it has rarely been a chamber of sober second overall. Time to pull the plug and get rid of it altogether. We don’t need an undemocratic chamber to reflect the interests of land in modern Canada.
Good riddance to rubbish!
Why is our senate appointed? They are public servants and should be elected. I agree with the constitutional requirement for a house of sober second thought. But there should be no golden handshake.
Oh those expense forms, so difficult or was it the secretary who did the all wrong? She got a nice do-nothing appointment that paid well and found a buffet of other ways to get money from fudging expenses. What a shame to throw away your reputation like that.
