The Canadian military is formally asking the defence industry to identify what companies can offer to either upgrade or replace Canada’s aging fleet of tanks.
The federal government published a request for information from potential suppliers so Ottawa can analyze options available on the market and start to draw up plans for future armoured land vehicle fleets.

A Canadian Army document published last year called “Inflection Point” warns that decades of fine tuning the military for counter-insurgency and peace operations had the side-effect of creating serious gaps in the military’s store of heavy arms.
The army’s armoured regiment has been left with a single squadron of decades-old Leopard tanks.

Modern warfare, as demonstrated by Russia’s war against Ukraine, has led to rapid advances in anti-tank drones and tank armour.
The procurement projects in the request for information are listed under “heavy direct-fire modernization,” which would include tanks, recovery vehicles and combat-support vehicles, as well as “medium cavalry vehicles” for a common light-armoured vehicle fleet.
Nah just keep using spare parts its what we have been doing for decades and seems to be fine .
someone said that Carney found a company that can put wheels on septic tanks, he was really impressed
Why not just put some armour and tampons on the trans- woman and float them out to sea ?
Todays tank are expensive targets and costly coffins. We need to spend our money where it will do some good: aerial drones and ground robots and robo subs. Just ask Ukraine.
An aerial drone is more accurate than any other direct fire weapon available today. It is also the lowest cost direct fire weapon Canada can buy. Ukraine expends over 10,000 drones per day. Hire some Ukrainians to modernize our military. They will do the job faster, better and cheaper than any other path.
Do not buy any tanks. They are defenseless against drones. Ukraine sends drones first, then ground robots, then infantry in APCs. 96% of the 35,000 casualties inflicted by Ukraine on Russian soldiers in March 2026 were due to aerial drones. We also do not need manned subs. Robo subs can do a better job for less money and less risk to our fighters. We do need ground based air defense that can deal with drones and 5th gen fighter jets.
Makes way more sense than buying submarines. We can actually see a use for these.
Hope we do not buckle and buy US duds.
Lloyd make a great point.
Anything but American. Buy European or Challenger III from UK.
Really? Our military needs to ask the defence industry what kind of tanks they need? They don’t have any insight into what kind or types of tanks that would kick their azz in a battle? I’m guessing they don’t get out much or have an R&D department. It’s like they are in shock that the Government is telling them to seek out new gear and modernize. For years they have to told to make due with used equipment like our existing fleet of Leopard Tanks which were bought used or British Subs which we bought used or Aussie F-18’s which were recently bought used. It’s sad.
