Travellers could soon be greeted by new Welcome to Alberta signs in the province.
The government is planning to replace its nearly two dozen square signs with placards shaped like the province.
A request for proposals provides details about the new shape, but what the signs will say is still up in the air.
Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen says it’s too early to know what the wording will be but it would offer a hearty welcome.
Signs currently read Welcome to Alberta and Wild Rose Country, with a picture of a small pink rose.
Last year, the government announced it would be dropping the Wild Rose Country phrase from licence plates in favour of the province’s official motto, Strong and Free.
Dreeshen says the new welcome signs are to start going up over the summer.

They claim that they need money with a big deficit and needed to raise property taxes. At the same time they unnecessarily spend money on thing like this and spent millions on the “Manning report” which was hardly unbiased as since Manning had publicly opposed some restrictions beforehand. This is not a fiscally conservative government.
Another perfect example of using our tax money for things that are not necessary. How about fixing the roads, lowering food and gas prices, supporting our teachers and healthcare system instead? If tax payers are footing the bill for this careless use of recourses, we should have a say. The powers that be need to get their heads out of the sand and listen to the people who pay their salary.

As an Albertan I see so many social issues that are far more important than the signs coming into this province or the saying on our license plates. I think it’s wasteful and the money could be used for far better purposes. But hey what do I know.

I love the Strong and Free motto! Suits most Albertans to a tee, but we might need a second motto for the snowflakes LOL
