Calgary police responded Monday morning to a serious pedestrian collision in the Panorama Hills neighbourhood that claimed the life of a senior.
Police said the call came in at 11:33 a.m. for the crash in the 200 block of Panatella Hill Northwest, near The Gates of Panorama Hills shopping complex.
A man in his 70s was in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a tractor trailer as it was backing up to unload cargo, police said.
The victim suffered “life-altering” injuries and was rushed to the hospital but sadly, succumbed to his injuries, police said in an update a few hours later.
A section of the Save On Foods parking lot, that included the grocery store’s loading dock, was blocked off with tape and police were seen investigating.
This was Calgary’s seventh traffic fatality in the first six weeks of 2026 and the third involving a pedestrian.

It is also the second pedestrian fatality this weekend, after a toddler in a stroller was hit in a marked crosswalk on the south side.
Ward 11 councillor Rob Ward, who represents the area where the child was killed, said drivers need to pay more attention.
“Slow down, look twice and drive with intention,” Ward said on Monday when commenting on the toddler’s death. “We owe it to every family and every child in the city to take our responsibility as a driver very seriously and we all have a role in making Calgary streets safer.”
“This tragedy, it’s a stark reminder that driver attention saves lives.”
Members of the Calgary Fire Department and EMS also responded to the north-side crash.
Police said the driver of the semi was not injured and stayed at the scene.
The circumstances that led to the collision remain under investigation.
