UPDATE: 4 Avenue flyover reopened after stabbing investigation

CALGARY – A major route into the downtown core has reopened after being closed while police investigated a fatal stabbing.

Police shut down the 4th Avenue flyover shortly around 7 a.m. on Friday causing chaos for thousands of commuters.

The decision to shut down the flyover came several hours after a man walked into the Delta Bow Valley hotel suffering from stab wounds.

He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The flyover was reopened shortly after 11 a.m.

However, the following roads are expected to remain closed through the afternoon rush hour:

  • Westbound 4 Avenue S.E. is closed from Macleod Trail to 1 Street S.E.
  • Southbound 1 Street S.E. from Riverfront Avenue to 4 Avenue S.E.
  • 3 Avenue S.E. from 1 Street S.E. to Centre Street.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid these areas and take alternate routes.
