Canada beats Switzerland 5-0 in Olympic women’s hockey opener

SOCHI, Russia – Canada opened the Olympic women’s hockey tournament with a 5-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday.

Jocelyne Larocque, Tara Watchorn, Hayley Wickenheiser, Marie-Philip Poulin and Rebecca Johnston scored for Canada.

Canada outshot the Swiss 69-14.

Goalie Charline Labonte earned the shutout, while Swiss goalie Florence Schelling made 64 saves in the loss.

Canada is the defending champion, having won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in women’s hockey.

The Canadians face Finland on Monday. The Finns fell 3-1 to the U.S. on Saturday.
