Officials explain what caused wire to fall and trap CTrain passengers

CALGARY – Calgary Transit says they have determined what caused an electrical wire to fall on a CTrain near Crowfoot Station last week, trapping commuters for more than an hour.

Officials say the overhead wire was rubbing a bare metal strip on the CTrain’s overhead framework, causing electrical arcing which cut through the strip as the train moved.

Part of the framework buckled, and struck the overhead wire, pulling it down.

The wire wrapped around the CTrain, and caused extensive damage.

Officials announced on Thursday they have removed seven CTrain cars which had the same carbon strip to further inspect them.

They also say they are reviewing and ramping up the inspection of the overhead framework.

The incident forced Calgary Transit to temporarily suspend CTrain service from Crowfoot Station, and instead bring in shuttle busses.
