UPDATE: Fallen wires trap commuters on CTrain, cause “extensive damage”

CALGARY- A number of commuters trying to head home on Tuesday afternoon were trapped on a CTrain.

Around 3:30 p.m., some electrical wires along the LRT track fell down, and wrapped around a train near the Crowfoot station.

“We heard a lot of thumps on the roof, and then we saw sparks go by,” recalls Courtney Blatch, who was on the train. “As we got closer the wire started to fall down, and it was kind of scary.”

A number of people were stuck on board, so fire crews and police were called in to block traffic and clear the area. Enmax crews were also brought in to disconnect power so that the riders could be escorted off the train.

Everyone got off about an hour and a half later, and there were no reports of injuries.

Shuttle buses were used to move passengers between stations, since the LRT line could not be used. One lane in each direction of Crowchild Trail remained shut down over the dinner hour, and service will be affected on Wednesday morning.

Calgary Transit is trying to determine what caused the wire to fall, and says damage is extensive.
