Homicide detectives take over after ‘serious assault’ victim dies in Vancouver

Vancouver police were called to the Downtown Eastside area of East Hastings and Main Street Friday morning. They found a man in critical condition who was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Vancouver police say a man who was the victim of a “serious assault” on the Downtown Eastside on Friday morning has died of his injuries.

Homicide investigators have now taken over the case.

Police said they were called to reports of a man in critical condition just after 1:30 a.m. near Main and Hastings streets.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said three ambulances were called to the scene. Emergency medical treatment was administered to the man and he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, later died.

Investigators believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

No one has been arrested in the case so far but Vancouver police said there is no public safety risk.

Anyone with information is asked to call VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604-717-2500.

Everyone is being asked to avoid the area while the investigation is underway.
