Toronto police say a woman is dead and several others have been injured, including a child, after a two-vehicle crash that shut down a portion of the Gardiner Expressway on Thursday morning.
Police said the crash happened at around 2 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the expressway near Jameson Avenue. At around 7 a.m., the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway reopened.
A black four-door Audi was “seen travelling at a high rate of speed” when it collided into the back of a KIA sedan, police allege.
The KIA sedan had five people inside, police said. A 40-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle died from her injuries in hospital.
A 20-year-old woman suffered life-altering injuries and a two-year-old child suffered minor injuries.
Paramedics told Global News they took a total of five people — four adults and one child — to hospital with varying injuries from critical to minor.
Witnesses told police the driver of the Audi fled the scene on foot and was seen walking on the elevated portion of the expressway towards Spadina Avenue, investigators said.
Police said in a later update that the suspect was arrested.
Vance Kong, a 48-year-old man from Whitby, is facing several charges including impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, failing to stop at an accident and causing death or harm, among other charges.
