Last-minute getaway deals still available

REGINA – Most of the getaways have been booked up, but there are still chances to snag some eleventh-hour deals.

“It’s the last minute push to see what’s here for the vacations this winter,” said Sheri Pollard, travel manager for Regina’s Quance Street CAA travel agency.

On Friday, she had an all-inclusive package, including a direct flight from Regina to Los Cabos, Mexico, for $1,375 leaving on January 2, 2014.

She says that it has been a “hectic” time lately, and that her agency fills up as the temperatures go down.

Pollard says that getting a deal on a getaway this week is tough, but there are ways to find them.

“If you’re tied to just Jamaica, for instance, you might not get [that trip], but if you’re willing to look outside of that, then there’s probably things we can do,” she said.

Jetting off to Mexico was the original plan until one of their friends told them, “’Hey, our seats are $300 cheaper now than they were before.’ So we thought, ‘Well, we’ll check it out and see if there’s any room left,’” said Joan.

The couple managed to get a seven-day all-inclusive Cuba getaway for about $2,300 – almost $1,000 less than they would have had to pay for Mexico.

Travel agents say it’s not an exact science, but there are ways to better your chances at finding deals.

Jody Hahn, travel counsellor for the Citynskis, says, “If you’re flexible with your dates and where you want to go, it makes it definitely easier to find last-minute deals.”

But for the most part, “It’s all kind of the luck in when you’re looking to go.”

And the Citynskis have lucked out. The couple say that their last-minute booking is something they will do again.

“It’s more exciting that way,” said Joan.

In a couple of weeks time, they’ll be trading in the windchills in Saskatchewan for some time under the Cuban sun.
