Crews responded to the fire in the 700 block of Seymour Avenue Southwest at around 5:10 p.m.

Calgary Fire Department said it was quickly able to bring the fire under control. “When they entered the home one adult male patient was found and removed from the rear of the home while an adult female patient was located and removed from the front of the home,” CFD said in a release Sunday night.

Fire officials said crews began CPR immediately, but the elderly mother was declared dead at the scene. Her son, who police said was in his 60s, was taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition.

Calgary police confirmed hours later that the son also succumbed to his injuries.

The victims’ autopsies are scheduled for Monday.

Police, fire and arson investigators are looking into the fire’s cause. Investigators said there was nothing leading them to believe the fire was suspicious.
