His name made international headlines, but Tim McLean’s family says his killer’s name continues to overshadow their son’s.

On Saturday, nearly two dozen family and friends of Tim McLean, Chad Davis and T.J. Wiebe walked through downtown Winnipeg in support of victims’ rights.

“We have to bring a better balance to what is available and what is provided for the offenders and what is available and provided for the victims, which right now is very, very out of balance,” said McLean’s mom, Carol DeDelley.

DeDelley’s son’s death made international headlines.

22-year-old Tim McLean was killed and beheaded while riding a Greyhound bus outside Portage la Prairie in 2008.

McLean’s family said the death is continually overshadowed by their son’s killer, Vince Li.

“This is about bringing the focus back to the victims in every which way we possibly can. The victims in these cases were our loved ones, they have names as well,” said DeDelley.

Others said they are walking for justice.

Lori Davis’s son Chad was found in a barrel in a river near Lac du Bonnet 5½ years ago.

The trial for the accused was set to begin earlier this year but was pushed back until 2014.

“It revictimizes us constantly, it devalues Chad’s life and we are walking in support of trying to remember Chad as best possible,” said Davis.

The organizers of the walk from the Forks to the legislature said more resources need to be made available to the victims.

“In some respects we are a very small group and some respects we are way too big,” said Karen Wiebe.
