Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, an Edmonton police K-9 unit was following a stolen vehicle in the Beverly area.

It was pulled over near 34 Street and 119 Avenue.

After being pulled over, several passengers jumped out and ran away before a pit bull leaped out and attacked a police service dog.

Police Service Dog Amok was attacked and it took several jolts with a stun gun and cans of pepper spray to subdue the pit bull.

Police stressed the dog broke free and was not given a command to attack.

Amok was rushed to a 24-hour vet clinic with minor facial injuries and the pit bull was taken to the pound.

The driver of the vehicle, who did not run, is in custody.
