One person was killed in a crash in the community of Southwood on Friday.

Emergency crews were called to the 800 block of 104 Avenue S.W. just after 4 a.m. after a vehicle hit a light post and then collided with a tree.

Calgary police said the driver, a man in his late teens, was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died.

“At this point we don’t know what caused the vehicle to run off the road,” Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey said. “Looks like speed was involved – there was a significant amount of damage.”

“It’s a side road – there’s no particular reason to be going that fast.”

Stacey added it didn’t appear alcohol was a factor in the collision.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Stacey said city streets were wet at the time of the collision but “not particularly slippery.”
