5-year-old killed in 3-vehicle crash in northern Alberta

Two SUVs and a truck collided on Highway 35 in northern Alberta Monday afternoon, killing a child and injuring five other people.

Manning RCMP said it happened south of Paddle Prairie near Keg River at 3:30 p.m.

Mounties said the SUVs were heading south on the highway when a truck heading north crossed into the oncoming lanes and collided with both SUVs.

A five-year-old child, a 35-year-old woman and an 11-year-old were in one SUV. The five-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, the woman was airlifted by STARS to hospital with serious injuries and the 11-year-old suffered minor injuries. All three are from Grande Prairie, Alta.

The 70-year-old man and 65-year-old woman from Medicine Hat, who were in the other SUV, were treated on scene and released with minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, a 31-year-old man from Grande Prairie, was treated for minor injuries on scene and released.

RCMP said all possible contributing factors are being considered and the crash remains under investigation.

Keg River is about 700 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
