KELOWNA – There will soon be more opportunities to study carpentry, plumbing, cooking and welding at Okanagan College.
The province’s Advanced Education Minister was in Kelowna Friday to announce $281,000 in funding earmarked to create more seats in those four programs.
All four trades are considered “in-demand” by the province.
“Our students and apprentices will be able to access these seats and finish their training so that they can meet the growing demand for skilled trades workers in the province,” said Okanagan College president Jim Hamilton.
In total 148 new seats will be created, including 80 in different levels of the carpentry program.
Current student cooking student Nathan Robinson is happy to know there will be more opportunities for others to get the same training.
“If these programs weren’t funded, there would be far fewer chances for people like me,” said Robinson.
