Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the death of man killed on the job at a plastics and chemical company site Wednesday.

Blackfalds RCMP were called to a workplace fatality at the Nova Chemicals PE1 Expansion Project in Joffre, which is about 30 kilometres southeast of Blackfalds, Alta. at 10:13 a.m.

A contractor was working on a crane when a piece of the equipment swung and hit him.

Nova Chemicals said the worker came into contact with the equipment which led to severe injury.

“While working on a stationary crane at the construction site, a contractor came in contact with equipment resulting in severe trauma,” Bill Greene, Nova Chemicals’ senior vice president, said in statement. “NOVA Chemicals Joffre Site emergency personnel responded to the incident and rescued the worker from the crane.”

A stop work order was put in place Wednesday as the investigation continues.

Nova Chemicals said it was a sad day at the site and everyone’s thoughts were with the family.

“Our belief is that every employee and contractor must go home safely – today that didn’t happen,” Greene said in his statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of the worker. As we recognize that during a difficult time like this, distractions can easily happen, we want to encourage employees to remain vigilant and look out for one another.”
