Saskatchewan election results 2016: Sask. Party wins Lumsden-Morse riding

Lyle Stewart of the Sask. Party has won the Lumsden-Morse riding with 6,111 votes beating out the NDP’s Rhonda Phillips who got 1,620 votes.

Summary: A rural riding surrounding Moose Jaw and the western part of Regina. Saskatchewan Party MLA for Thunder Creek, Lyle Stewart, is running in this new riding.

Boundaries: This riding stretches from Stewart Valley in the west to Wilcox in the east. Regina Beach is to the north and Truax in the south. It includes the villages of Grand Coulee, Waldeck, Caronport, Mortlach, Chaplin and the towns of Herbert and Pense. This new riding was formed out of pieces of nine others. The majority, 53 per cent, came from the Thunder Creek riding. The next largest contributors were Indian Head-Milestone (15 per cent) and Moose Jaw-Wakamow (11 per cent). Smaller contributors were Last Mountain-Touchwood, Regina Qu’appelle Valley, Regina Wascana Plains, Swift Current, Weyburn-Big Muddy and Wood River.

Last Election: New riding so no incumbent. The Saskatchewan Party candidate Lyle Stewart is the current MLA for Thunder Creek.

History: This is a new riding created for the April 4 provincial election. Three additional constituencies have been added for this general election. The new boundaries were passed into law on May 15, 2013 after feedback from individuals and groups.

Saskatchewan Party: Lyle Stewart, recently served as Minister of Agriculture and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation

NDP: Rhonda Phillips, teacher at Lumsden High School and Lumsden town councillor

Liberal: Gerry Hiebert, retired as Chief Executive Officer of multi-hospital system in Edmonton, AB and in New Westminster, BC
