Forensic evidence links dead man to Edmonton’s 18th homicide of 2015

EDMONTON — The man responsible for Edmonton’s 18th homicide of 2015 was found dead a day before the victim’s body was discovered in a north Edmonton home, according to police.

Through forensic evidence, the EPS Homicide Section determined that John Gearhart, 37, was responsible for the death of Patricia Roach.

Gearhart was found dead on Friday, Oct. 22, 2015 in Spruce Grove, Alta. His death is considered non-criminal.

The next afternoon, Edmonton police were called to a home near 130 Avenue and 123 Street in the Calder neighbourhood. The body of Roach, 54, was found in the home. An autopsy confirmed she was fatally stabbed.

Investigators believe Roach was killed late on Oct. 21 or on Oct. 22.

Neighbours told Global News a woman lived in the home for about 10 years with her common-law boyfriend, and believed the pair recently broke up and he moved out. They described her as a friendly, quiet neighbour.

Police confirmed the victim and suspect knew each other.

Police said no charges will be laid because the suspect is dead, so the homicide file is now concluded.
