‘Star Trek Beyond’ trailer: Is this a rock ‘n’ roll space caper?

That’s the music playing during the just-released Star Trek Beyond trailer, and it illustrates how the once-campy series has graduated into new, modern territory, for better or for worse. The general consensus of Star Trek fans online is one of disappointment with this first trailer:

J.J. Abrams, who’s now directing the Star Wars franchise (in case you didn’t know), is solely a producer on this film. The new director, Fast and the Furious‘ Justin Lin, seems to be putting his own contemporary spin on the franchise. We can gather from the trailer that the good guys from the Enterprise are fighting a new foe, and there’s a lot of fighting and warping going on.
