Some B.C. residents are being left frustrated this afternoon after attempting to cast a ballot at advance voting stations.

Lineups of at least 45 minutes are being reported at Hemlock Street and 12th Avenue, at Kitsilano  Community Centre, Creekside Community Recreation Centre, King George High School in Vancouver and Vancouver Technical Secondary School, among others.

There are also reports of long lines in parts of Abbotsford.

At King George, one would-be voter told Global News that when he arrived to vote the line was already very long.

Staff at Elections Canada have now started asking the elderly people in the line to skip to the front as they can’t stand in the line for a long time.

He said the rest of the crowd is quite annoyed however, and some people are leaving without voting.

Elections Canada says staff do their best to serve everyone and thank people for their patience. They say advance poll voting takes a couple of minutes longer than regular voting as there are slightly different procedures under the Elections Act.

“We can’t always anticipate volume but returning officers watch for it and can send additional staff to help when required,” they said in a statement.

You can vote from noon until 8 p.m. on the following four days:

  • Friday, Oct. 9
  • Saturday, Oct. 10
  • Sunday, Oct. 11
