1 suspect in custody after daytime Distillery District shooting

TORONTO — Police say one suspect is in custody after a daytime shooting in the Distillery District on Wednesday afternoon.

“There was just 10 or 11 loud gunshots all in a row and then they stopped for a second and there were a bunch more and then everyone just started running it was crazy,” said Shannon Ferguson, who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting from her office building’s balcony.

“I just saw tons of construction workers running and a bunch of people and kids running through the park.”

Officers responded to the theft of a silver Toyota Corolla at Bond Street and Shuter street at about 12:05 p.m. Once the vehicle was located, police attempted to stop the Toyota but the driver allegedly resisted and police said a firearm was discharged during the pursuit and attempted arrest of the suspect.

Three police cruisers rammed the Toyota, which had sustained heavy damage and was seen riddled with bullet holes,  and police said the suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot before officers arrested him at the intersection of Parliament Street and Mill Street.

“I’ve never heard that many gunshots it sounded like construction [equipment] or something falling out of the sky,” Ferguson said, adding that the entire areas was taped off. “It wasn’t just one or two gunshots it was multiple.”

Const. Jennifer Sidhu said officers were on scene checking the area and said there were no injuries to report.
