Man airflifted to hospital after crash on Spray Lakes Road near Canmore

CALGARY – A man was airlifted to hospital after a head-on crash between a pickup truck and a dump truck on Spray Lakes Road near Canmore, Alta. Friday afternoon.

Canmore RCMP said the crash happened in the area of Highway 742 at around 1:30 p.m. The dump truck then drove down an embankment and crashed into some trees. The 60-year-old driver of that truck was not seriously injured.

The 48-year-old driver of the Blue 2013 Ford F150 pickup truck had to be transported to Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre by STARS Air Ambulance. Emergency crews said he was conscious for the entire trip. Two young children and a dog were in the backseat of the pickup truck. The children, ages four and six, were taken to Alberta Children’s Hospital as a precautionary measure but were uninjured.

RCMP said poor visibility may have played a role in the crash on the gravel highway, suggesting wind picking up dust from the road may have made it difficult for drivers to see. Police said all people involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Canmore RCMP are investigating.
