An evacuation order that was put in place for 100 residences on the western edge of Port Hardy has been lifted.

“The boys have made some progress on the fire,” says Mayor Hank Bood.

“It’s further back from town that it’s used to be.”

People who lived in the area of Mayors Way and Upper Carnarvon, west end to Park Drive, who were evacuated Friday night and Saturday morning will be allowed to return to their homes at 8 p.m., says Bood.

The fire, which grew to 17 hectares in size, came within 400 metres of homes on the northwestern edge of Port Hardy on the evening of July 3. The town declared a state of emergency, allowing the district to bill the province for expenses it incurs.

Bood praised the people of Port Hardy for coming together during the threat.

“We really had no resistance. Everyone in the town really cooperated. It’s sort of that small-town thing.”

The evacuation alert remains in place, and Bood cautioned residents returning to their home tonight to be prepared in case the fire worsens.

“Nothing’s a sure thing, but I know that the fire service is very cautious in [lifting an order],” he says.

“But things can change.”
