EDMONTON – A 29-year-old man is facing a list of charges including dangerous driving causing death after a woman was killed in a collision in west Edmonton Friday night.
Staff Sgt. Colin Leathem with the Edmonton Police Service says officers attempted to stop a BMW in the area of 184 Street and 100 Avenue around 11 p.m. when the vehicle sped away. Leathem says the car was not pursued by police.
Several blocks later, at 170 Street, Leathem says the BMW ran a red light and collided with a taxi cab.
A 51-year-old female passenger of the taxi was taken to hospital where she was declared dead, Leathem said Saturday afternoon.
The driver of the taxi and another passenger were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The passenger of the BMW was taken to hospital with extensive head injuries, according to Leathem.
The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot. Police located the man in a nearby residential area and took him into custody.
James Miller-Laney, 29, has since been charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing harm, two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, flight from police causing death, flight from police causing bodily harm and breach of recognizance.
Miller-Laney sustained non life-threatening injuries.
