EDMONTON – A man is dead after an RCMP-involved shooting northwest of Edmonton.

RCMP were called to a trespassing complaint at a rural property near Morinville, near Range Road 263 around 8:15 p.m. Friday.

Two officers found the subject – a 47-year-old man who was under conditions not to go to the property – in a field next to the residence.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said the man appeared to have two rifles in his possession.

“As police officers attempted to deal with the male, a short confrontation occurred that resulted in the male being shot once by police,” ASIRT said.

The man fell in the field but the officers could still see him moving.

Officials said an armed stand-off began and an Emergency Response Team was called out.

“Attempts to communicate with the male were unsuccessful,” the ASIRT news release said. “When ERT approached, the 47-year-old male was found deceased.”

ASIRT was called out before the man’s death was confirmed. Investigators recovered a loaded .22 calibre rifle near the man’s body and a 30/30 lever action rifle nearby in the field. Investigators also seized the carbine rifle fired by police.

The victim’s identity has not been released. No one else was injured in the incident.

This is the eighth officer-involved shooting since Dec. 24, 2014 that ASIRT has been called in to investigate. Four of those incidents were fatal.
