WINNIPEG — Winnipeg Jets’ captain Andrew Ladd will have surgery on Friday for a sports hernia. Ladd played throughout the playoffs with the injury.

“We’re going to do surgery this Friday actually in St. Louis,” said Ladd. “So I’ll have surgery there and then begin the recovery process from there.”

Ladd chose to have the procedure done in St. Louis because of the specialist who’ll be performing the surgery.

“I wanted to get the right guy to do it,” said Ladd. “The guy who is going to be best to do it properly, long term, and the guy in St. Louis seemed like that guy.”

Full recovery from this type of surgery usually takes 2 to 3 months but Ladd won’t know his exact timeline until after meeting with his doctor later in the week.

“I meet with the surgeon on Thursday,” said Ladd. “So I think I’ll have a better idea on the timeline after I talk to him and figure out exactly what we’re going to do.”

Ladd was speaking on a conference call after getting nominated for the Mark Messier Leadership Award and he credited both his childhood and some of his former teammates for helping him be the leader he is today.

“I think first and foremost your parents and the way you’re brought up sets a tone for your morals, and what you believe in, and how you go about your business,” said Ladd. “I was fortunate to be on a really veteran team my first year in Carolina with guys like Rod Brind’Amour and Ray Whitney, Glen Wesley, Mark Recchi and Doug Weight and the list kinda went on and on. So I was able to come in and sit and watch and see how these guys approach the game and how professional they were.”

The Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews and the Anaheim Ducks Ryan Getzlaf were also nominated. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas on June 24.
