TORONTO – The boy from one the Internet’s most popular and longest-running memes, “Success Kid,” is turning to the web to help get his father a new kidney.
Sammy Griner, who is now 8 years old, is the adorable baby in the famed image of the gleeful child clenching his fist in victory.
Sammy’s 39-year-old father, Justin Griner, has been battling kidney disease since before his son was born, and now needs a transplant.
Speaking with ABC News, Sammy’s mother said her husband spends nearly four hours a day, three times a week, undergoing dialysis.
“Six years on dialysis is getting to be a long time,” Laney Griner said. “It’s wearing on him. … I just want to get him healthy.”
Hoping to find a living donor and raise some money to help cover the cost of Justin’s transplant, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign, with a goal of $75,000.
In its first six days, the campaign raised $80,000.
