New Brunswick hit with another blast of winter

MONCTON – Moncton residents digging themselves out from Sunday’s storm say they’re ready for winter to end.

Vicki Kurkowski got up this morning to shovel around her home and driveway and said she was hoping the storm would have missed the city.

“I think we’ve had enough,” she said. “I think we should have at least one storm that could miss us, but obviously this year it’s not going to happen.”

The winter storm picked up early Sunday morning. By noon, driveways and roads were filled with blowing snow.

Amy Short said she’s had enough of this winter.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Blinding snow made driving conditions in and around the city difficult. Even truckers stayed off the roads to wait for the weather to pass.

Trucker Mark Durling said the driving conditions were terrible.

“Slippery, dirty and I can’t see,” he said. “It sucks.”

Even people trying to fly out of the Greater Moncton International Airport faced delays and cancellations.

Amy Wilcox had been stuck at the airport since early Sunday morning.

“We were supposed to fly out today and our flight was cancelled twice because we got bumped and we’re flying out tomorrow evening,” she said.

Wilcox said she hoped the weather would improve on Monday.

“I come from Ontario so this is my first New Brunswick storm,” she said. “I’d like to get back home to my kids but unfortunately mother nature has chosen otherwise.”

Even some people trying to escape the weather were out of luck. The Anglophone East School District closed schools for community use before noon.

But some people made the best of it. Jesse Howatt said his dog enjoyed the snow.

“The dog loves it,” he said, while taking his dog for a walk. “It tires him out a bit quicker because he gets to jump through the snow so it’s good for me.”

Kurkowski even admitted the bad weather can have a silver lining.

“Every time it storms, I go out shopping because there’s nobody in the stores,” she said.
